Why Your Church Doesn't Show Up on Google (And How to Fix It)
Someone in your city searched "church near me" this morning. They didn't find you. They found the megachurch 10 miles away instead. Here's why — and exactly how to fix it.
The Problem: You're Invisible
Here's a number that should concern you: 90% of people looking for a new church start with a Google search.
Not a recommendation from a friend. Not a drive-by sighting. Google.
They type "church near me" or "church in [your city]" and Google shows them results. If you're not in those results, you don't exist to them.
The megachurch down the road? They show up. The new church plant with a marketing budget? They show up. You? Nowhere.
The brutal truth: Having a website isn't enough. Having a Facebook page isn't enough. If you don't have a properly set up Google Business Profile, you're invisible to the people actively looking for a church.
Why This Happens
Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is how Google knows your church exists, where it's located, and when you meet. Without it, Google has nothing to show searchers.
Most small churches either:
- Don't have a Google Business Profile at all
- Have one but never claimed it
- Claimed it years ago but never optimized it
- Have outdated information (wrong service times, old address)
Any of these = invisibility.
The Fix: 30 Minutes to Get Found
Here's exactly what to do:
Step 1: Claim Your Profile (5 minutes)
Go to business.google.com and search for your church. If it exists, claim it. If not, create it. You'll need to verify by postcard, phone, or email.
Step 2: Complete Every Field (10 minutes)
Google rewards complete profiles. Fill out:
- Business name (your church name exactly)
- Category: "Church" (add secondary categories if relevant)
- Address and service area
- Phone number
- Website
- Service times (use "Hours" section)
- Description (250+ characters, include your city name)
Step 3: Add Photos (10 minutes)
Profiles with photos get 42% more direction requests. Add:
- Exterior of your building (so people recognize it)
- Interior during a service
- Your pastor/leadership
- Any community events
Step 4: Get Reviews (ongoing)
Churches with 10+ reviews rank dramatically higher. Ask 20 members this Sunday. You'll probably get 10-12 reviews. That's enough to start.
What Happens Next
Within 2-4 weeks of completing these steps, you'll start appearing in local search results. People searching "church near me" in your area will see your church alongside the bigger ones.
The playing field isn't level — bigger churches still have advantages. But at least you're on the field.
Pro tip: Post updates to your Google Business Profile weekly. Share your sermon title, announce events, post photos from Sunday. Google rewards active profiles with higher rankings.
